What is behind your choice of forum user name?
by stuckinarut2 injust curious how we all think.. what prompted or influenced your choice of username for this forum?.
there are some really amazing names, and it would be great to hear the stories behind them.... mine was nothing fancy.

Would You EVER Go Back To Being A Jehovah's Witness?
by minimus ini could never understand why some people who know the truth about the "truth" ever go back.
once you understand all the hypocrisy and negatives, i would think it's almost impossible to go back!.

There is no aspect of the religion that would be enticing. When I was a child I thought they had all the answers. But as an adult with critical thinking skills, I know their teachings are uneducated fantasy based upon greed and control.
I keep thinking back to the people of my youth that I thought were intelligent people, and realize they were bumbling idiots. I'm now 40 with a great career and financial assets. I travel the world and enjoy life, something that wouldn't have happened as a JW. I went to visit my mother and those same people from my youth are in their 60's and 70s. They are in poverty and still are a slave to the religion in mind, spirit, and body.

I'm in Japan for three weeks visiting my sister-in-law and brother. The people are so polite and I came across two female JW using the Cart. It is the same experience I noticed back in the States. The two Japanese women are just standing there smiling and everyone is ignoring them. I understand the appeal to the rank & file as it is an easy way to get the hour requirements in. But for the JW organization I doubt it is a useful recruiting tool. The college I attended I never saw one student engage in a conversation with the JW and their book cart.

I'm sorry for your loss and having to go through that with your mother.
I'm a nursing student in my final year and work at a local hospital in the cardiac unit. I've also worked in a memory care unit prior to enrolling into nursing school. Those who suffer from Alzheimer are in many ways not the same person. The true extent of damage done to a Alzheimer patient is not known until after death and a biopsy is performed. The brain literally deteriorates and so much is no longer there. I've had the privilege of attending a Seminar with Teepa Snow on Alzheimer. She is a nationally renowned dementia expert.

Were you beaten as a child?
by purrpurr ini've been confronting my mother with her dubious parenting skills (abuse) of me as a child.
particularly the beatings i would get with the wooden spoon.
not a light smack but hitting me as hard as she could for as long as she could.

I suppose by today's standard I was "beaten". I wouldn't have a problem with the spankings, except my parents never hit me out of discipline. They hit me with belts, hands, and branches out of angry. There was no cooling down and coming back and then disciplining us children. Instead my father would be angry because we interrupted his sleep or tv program so we got smacked immediately. I think the verbal abuse was more traumatic than the physical discipline. Being told your worthless piece of shits because you have a bad day at work is not acceptable. To this day my sister that is 43 has low self esteem and I think it originates from the JW lifestyle. The worst was when my father literally forced me to eat a small portion of soap that was used and dirty. This wasn't for cussing but because I talked back to him. I was 9 years old at the time. That only happened once but I still remember it vividly. He squeezed my entire body with one arm and force a bar of soap into my mouth with his other. My mother doing nothing about it.
My father never became a JW but allowed and supported my mother's decision to force this awful religion onto us. I think he liked their disciplinary methodology.

My physically disabled mom attends one day assembly while excusing herself from her best friend's wake.
by RULES & REGULATIONS inmy mom has been physically disabled the last three years.she cannot walk without assistance, needs someone to cut up her food, needs help bathing and is either in bed,in a wheelchair or sitting in an electric recliner.my brother pays for her care while he's at work and takes care of her after work and weekends.. last week my mom calls me to tell me that her best friend of 50 years (who was not a jehovah's witness ) passed away.she tells me that the wake would be on monday night.i told her that i would help my brother get her in the car and stay an hour or so with them and help pay her last respects to her best friend's husband and 3 children.. she tells me that she would have a hard time getting in and out of the car and sitting at the funeral home would be too difficult.so,i decide to attend her best friend's wake to represent our family since neither my dad,mom and brother decide to attend.i attended the wake and told the widowed husband and the 3 children that my mom was sorry that she couldn't attend the wake due to being physically disabled.. i found out that my mom attended a one day assembly on that saturday.
she sat in her wheelchair from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to listen to the program.i'm pissed that she would miss her best friend's wake but attended an 8 hour assembly.my wife told me that i should of called her on why....." if she's so sick she could physically attend the assembly and not her best friend's wake.

This religion worships those that are willing to do what your mother did. They, JW Leadership, usually make up such stories and here they have a real life example. I can hear it now coming from the stage,
"See brothers and sister, this elderly and affirmed sister was able to make it to the assembly despite her disability. What is your excuse?"
I'm sure this has been grounded into your mothers head for a long long time.

We have a population of 400 million with just as many guns. You will be able to find this type of story every day if you like. The obsession over American culture, politics, and laws seems strange. Most Americans could care less what happens over in Britain. -

Higher Education - is it really the end of the WT?
by OutsiderLookingIn inas a non-jw, before i started looking into things, i must say i only encountered intelligent jws.
so i was quite surprised to read here and in the pew report about their low overall educational achievement.
granted, my exposure was limited (less than a handful of people over a lifetime) but i met two of them in post-college education (graduate school) at a very good school.

Maybe the type of degree will have different impacts. If a person were to study the liberal arts at the graduate level, I'm not sure how they wouldn't be able to see the WT as the mind controlling cult it is. Then again I know an Elder that is a lawyer, an Elder that is a high school teacher, and so on. There are those that stay for family or the easy social network that comes along with the religion. Or if you own a business the kingdom hall is a nice supply of cheap labor. -

I was obedient and submissive to the Org until 18. I'm still a good person, just not their version of "good".
